About

Four decades at the edge of machine intelligence

Born in Bonn, Germany, Chris has moved between research and industry since the earliest days of neural networks — and now applies that grounding to the question of how superintelligence will arrive, and how to make sure it arrives well.

1979

Master's thesis, Technical University of Berlin

Wrote one of the earliest neural network simulations, laying the groundwork for a career spent studying intelligent systems decades before the field entered the mainstream.

Early 1980s

University of Massachusetts

Continued neural network research under Professor Michael Arbib before returning to Berlin.

1980s–90s

Founder, Berlin

Built a successful software company in Berlin through to a successful exit, then relocated to the United States.

2000

Second company, taken public

Led a second company to an IPO during the 2000 internet boom.

Today

Superintelligence research & advisory

Studies the disruption superintelligence will impose on the financial sector, advises institutions navigating that shift, and is involved in several AI initiatives focused on making the transition to superintelligence safe and responsible.

The Framework

Basic Requirements for Superintelligence

Chris is developing the Basic Requirements for Superintelligence — a framework for identifying the conditions that must be in place for superintelligence to emerge, and to do so beneficially rather than destructively. It is the intellectual backbone of his forthcoming book and his advisory work with institutions.

The framework underpins how he evaluates the pace and shape of the coming transition — and what researchers, investors, and institutions should be watching for as it unfolds.

For Wealth Managers & Institutions

What superintelligence means for the financial sector

Chris is known for his study of the disruptions superintelligence will impose on finance, and he consults with institutions preparing for that transition.

01

Scenario planning

Mapping how the pace and shape of superintelligence's arrival could reorder markets, risk, and capital allocation.

02

Institutional advisory

Working directly with leadership teams to position their organizations ahead of a transition most have not yet priced in.

03

Research & frameworks

Applying the Basic Requirements for Superintelligence framework to questions of timing, safety, and beneficial outcomes for the financial system.

Mission

A smooth transition — and a magnificent world for what comes next

Chris's mission is to help make the transition to superintelligence smooth, and to help build a magnificent world for his five grandchildren.

He shares this work with his partner, Doria Cordova, a leading transformational teacher and owner of Money & You, the personal development program that has trained many of the world's best-known entrepreneurial voices.
